Eleanor Theresa Smith (nee Bende), 96, of Potomac, MD, passed away on Wednesday, June 28, 2022,
Cherished wife of the late LeRoy Smith. Dear sister of the late Helen McCollum and brother, Orlando Earl Bende and daughter of the late Angelo Bende and Mary Tobia.
Eleanor was born and raised in Williamstown where she met the love of her life, LeRoy Smith. After receiving her Bachelor’s degree from Glassboro State College and teaching locally, the couple relocated to the Washington DC suburbs, where Eleanor earned a Master’s degree in education at American University. She was responsible for the District of Columbia elementary school science curriculum and later taught English as a second language at the Americanization School where she enjoyed interacting with her foreign students, who were wives of ambassadors and their children.
Eleanor will be remembered for her vibrant personality, her sense of wit and humor, her love of life, animals and nature, and her unending devotion to her husband. The couple were married for 68 years when he passed in 2016.
She is survived by nieces, Karen (Paul) Humphreys, Susan (Scott) Winkles, Linda (Bryan) Abbott, Doris (Richard) Wood, Joan (Ed) Salonish and Elaine May as well as great and great-great nieces and nephews and her caregivers, Sandra and Asu.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend her viewing on Thursday, July 7th from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Peace Parish / St. Mary's Church, Main St. and Carroll Ave., Williamstown. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Noon. Interment is at St. Mary's Cemetery, Williamstown.
