Hilbert "Butch" J. Dunning, Jr.

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Hilbert “Butch” Joseph Dunning, Jr., who passed away peacefully on January 1, 2025, at the age of 83, surrounded by his loving family.

Born in February 1941 in Pittston, PA to Ruth E. Dunning and Hilbert J. Dunning, Sr. Brother to Ruth Farms (Alan), Rita Batten, Lois Benton and Sandra Hartzell. Brother in law to Jack Donnelly.

Butch was a graduate of Edgewood Regional High School in 1961. He proudly served in the United States Navy for four years and worked for AT&T for 38 years. 

Butch was a devoted husband to Edith M. Dunning (nee Donnelly) for 57 years. He was the loving father to Gregory Dunning, Michael Dunning, Debra Bautista and their spouses Kelly, Emily and Alan. Butch was the cherished “Pop Pop” to Sophia Dunning, Darren Dunning, Donovan Dunning, Jolene Dunning, Isabelle Bautista, Addison Bautista and Harper Bautista. 

Butch was preceded in death by his brother in laws Joe Batten, Bud Benton, and Robert Hartzell; sister-in-law Marie Donnelly.

Butch was the ultimate family man. He enjoyed traveling the US with his family, teaching his children sports, attending his grandkids special events and cheering them on during their games. Butch was an avid Phillies and Eagles fan. Known for being sweet, selfless, smiling, having an infectious laugh, and beautiful blue eyes. He will be terribly missed by all that knew him. May he rest in peace.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his viewing on Friday January 10th from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at the Bell-Hennessy Funeral Home, 420 South Main St., Williamstown and on Saturday, January 11th from 9:00 – 10:00 AM at Our Lady of Peace Parish, 32 Carroll Ave., Williamstown.  Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM.  Interment with Military Honors will follow at Gloucester County Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Williamstown.
