Jean E Hernandez (nee Githens), 93, of Elk Township, NJ, formerly of Turnersville, NJ, passed away on Tuesday, September 4th, 2024.
She was the beloved wife of the late George F Hernandez and the devoted daughter of Frank Githens and Amy (Irvin) Githens. She is survived by son Mark Hernandez and daughter Kim (Hernandez) Jacobs, granddaughters Lauren Hernandez and Megan (Hernandez) Cosentino and great grandson Finnegan.
Jean was born in the family farmhouse on Black horse Pike in Turnersville, NJ on February 6, 1931 and christened soon after at the St John’s United Methodist Church in Turnersville, NJ where she had been a faithful member and steadfast supporter for her entire life.
After graduating Glassboro High School in 1949, Jean went on to attend and graduate from Moore College of Art in Philadelphia, PA in 1953 where she studied commercial art. This led to a career as the Art Director at Anthony J Jannetti, Inc in Pitman, NJ where she created and directed the artwork for many medical trade publications.
Jean and George started their family in the early 60’s and raised two children in Turnersville, NJ, not far from where she was born. She enjoyed their summer day trips to the NJ shore and summer vacations in Daytona Beach, FL with George’s family members.
She is a staunch supporter of several philanthropic entities, including St John’s United Methodist Church, Ranch Hope for Boys, and the Bolivia Evangelical University. In retirement, Jean donated much of her time to the Ranch Hope for Boys thrift shop in Woodstown, NJ and the Oasis Soup Kitchen in Salem, NJ.
Her free time was spent creating wonderful pieces of watercolor artwork. Her favorite subject was flowers and other still life subjects. Her works are hanging in many a friend’s and family’s homes as she shared the paintings with everyone.
Jean was dedicated wife and mother, a devoted daughter, an exemplary employee, a champion to the less fortunate, and a great friend to many. There are too many lives to mention that she has touched over her 93 years on this earth. She never missed a chance to reach out to the needy and lend a hand, never asking for anything in return. She will be dearly missed by so many people. This world could use more people like Jean.
God bless you, Jean.
