John T. Nolan, Sr.

John T. Nolan, Sr., of Franklinville, passed away on Saturday, June 24, 2023.

John was born and raised in Newark with his parents and two sisters. He attended St. Lucy’s Grammar School where his classmates and teachers dubbed him “The Professor” since he demonstrated high academic achievement beyond his age. Johnworked a paper route in his neighborhood, was a dedicatedEagle Scout, served as an altar boy, and went on to become a member of the men’s church choir while attending Essex Catholic High School. After achieving academic honors in the sciences, and National Merit Finalist status, John graduated high school and elected to attend Newark College of Engineering(NCE). He graduated from NCE with a degree in Chemical Engineering, and shortly thereafter married the love of his life, Joanne. Several work years later, with their first child, Jennifer, in tow, John obtained his Masters Degree in Chemical Engineering from Penn State University. A few years later, John Jr. was born to complete their nuclear family. 

John’s professional engineering work life included positions with Bethlehem Steel, Monsanto, and other companies. Aside from his engineering interests, John was a prolific reader, DIYhome project man, loved to vacation at the Jersey Shore with his family and pets, and had a great interest in discussing history, politics, and a variety of stimulating topics with a dash of great humor.  

Beloved husband of the late Joanne Nolan (nee Serafin). Devoted father of Jennifer (Gregory) Stiefel and John Nolan, Jr.  Loving son of the late Marie Nolan. Dear brother of Patricia Nolan and the late Kathleen Nolan. Loving grandfather of Ryan and Garin Stiefel.  

Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing on Friday, June 30th from 9:30 – 10:30 AM at the Bell-Hennessy Funeral Home, 420 S. Main St., Williamstown. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:00 AM at Our Lady of Peace Parish / St. Mary’s RC Church, 32 Carroll Ave., Williamstown. Cremation private.
