Joseph Smart Obituary

Joseph M. Smart, 64, of Williamstown, passed away on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, at his home surrounded by his loving family after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

Predeceased by his parents John and Anna (nee Julia) and his brother John (Toni) Smart.

Beloved husband of Lisa (nee Sebastian). Devoted father of Christopher (Alisha) Smart, Brian (Megan) Smart, Ashley (Colin) Campbell and Anthony Mancini. Dear brother of James (Robyn) Smart, Maryann Smart, Michael (Elena) Smart, Anna Marie (Thomas) Mills, Andrew Smart and Bernadette (Thomas) Westcott. Loving grandfather of Calista, Damian and Sloane. Loving uncle of many nieces & nephews and great nieces & nephews.

Joseph lived a life of service, strength and compassion. He proudly served his community as a member of the Monroe Township Police Department where he was hired as a patrol officer in 1986. Over the years he achieved the ranks of Detective, Det. Sergeant, Det. Lieutenant, Captain, and Chief of Police. He was also a member of the Gloucester County Swat Team for several years. He retired as Chief of Police in 2013. 

Outside of the uniform he loved spending time with family and friends. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, often found in the woods or by the water where he felt connected to nature. Joe excelled as an athlete throughout his years, enjoying sports such as basketball, baseball, softball, golf, and weightlifting. 

He will be remembered for his quick wit, helping hand, big heart, and unwavering loyalty to those he loved. 

Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing on Monday, June 23rd from 5:00 - 8:00 PM and Tuesday, June 24th from 9:15 – 10:15 AM at the Bell-Hennessy Funeral Home, 420 S. Main St., Williamstown. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:00 AM at Our Lady of Peace Parish / St. Mary’s R.C. Church, Main St. & Carroll Ave., Williamstown. Interment St. Mary’s Cemetery, Williamstown.
