Maria L. Colomy (nee Mellies), 86, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, July 31, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.
Beloved wife of the late Warren D. Colomy. Devoted mother of David Colomy (long-time companion, Pamela Gober, and their grandson Michael Sydney Helvig) and Heidi (Mark) Horner. Loving grandmother of Paige (Andrew) Brown and Madison Cresci. Doting great-grandmother of Audrey Brown. Dear sister of James (Patricia) Gardiner. Loving aunt of many nieces and nephews.
Maria grew up in Germany, immigrating to the United States at the age of 18, where, despite speaking five languages, she had to teach herself English. She learned a great deal about the language from her volunteer work at Episcopal Hospital in Philadelphia, which quickly turned into a job and the foundation of her technical training. Her chance meeting with Warren at Episcopal Hospital started the love story that would culminate in 64 years of marriage and a beautiful family they both adored. Much of Maria’s life was spent caring for others, be it at home or work. Most of her career performing electroencephalograms and electrocardiograms was spent serving the developmentally disabled population. Among Maria’s many talents, she shared her love through cooking and crocheting blankets for everyone she knew. Nothing pleased her more than a house full of family and friends sharing food and stories. If you were one of the lucky ones, you got to hear her play her concertina. Maria was a geography and history buff and loved sports – high school, college, and professional. She was lovingly known as Mrs. C. or Oma to all her children and grandchildren’s friends. Maria leaves behind the legacy of a matriarch – strong, wise, and brave.
Relatives and friends are invited to her viewing on Saturday, August 9th from 9:30 – 10:45 AM at St. Rose of Lima Church/Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Parish, 104 Catawba Avenue, Newfield, New Jersey. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM. Interment Rose Hill Cemetery, Newfield, New Jersey.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to NJ Health Hospice Care or The Arc of New Jersey.
