Rodney Eugene Thornton passed away peacefully on December 9, 2025 at the age of 72. Born on January 27, 1953, in New York City, he was the beloved son of the late Edith Thornton (Perkins) and Sylvester Bagby.
Rodney graduated from Andrew Jackson High School and completed courses at Hunter College before embarking on a distinguished career in the United States Navy, enrolling on March 27, 1986. Excelling in the Information Technology specialty, Rodney served his country with honor and distinction, retiring as a decorated Chief Petty Officer on April 30, 2007.
His military accolades included:
(2) Navy and Marine Corp Commendation Medals
(4) Marine Corp Achievement Medals
Joint Meritorious Unit Award
Navy Unit Commendation
(2) Navy “E” Ribbons
(6) Good Conduct Medals

His naval service was a passport around the globe, with duty stations in Puerto Rico, Japan, Italy, and Bahrain. Despite his world travels and achievements, Rodney always longed for the closeness of his family and the simplicity of American fast food.
A reserved yet engaging spirit, Rodney was a devoted lover of black art and history, all things DC and Marvel, and music, especially Motown. He could spend hours downloading, organizing, and discussing his favorites. An avid family photo taker, Rodney had a unique gift for capturing the innocence, awkwardness, and beauty of family life often dropping by family members' homes toting snacks for his grandnieces and grandnephews. He was always up to date with the newest technology, often leading loved ones to wonder if he had stock in Apple. Rodney fondly recounted his one-man cross-country trip and held plans for a return visit to the U.S. Virgin Islands. He was a competitive partner at any family gathering, enjoying games of spades or bid whist and supplying his sister Marvyne with an endless stream of UNO cards.
Rodney is preceded in death by his parents, Sylvester Bagby and Edith Perkins, stepfather Marvin Cameron and his sister, Marva Renee Jackson- Brown.
He is survived by his loving sisters, Sylvia Diane Conard and Marvyne Cameron; his Aunt Verti Bagby; and a host of cherished nieces and nephews: Rakisha Cooper (Hasan), Aesha Jackson, Shamecca Bernardini (Michael), Edie Jackson, Kenney Jackson, and Marvin Jackson. He also leaves behind numerous grandnieces and grandnephews, including Shakira Jones, Shatese Jackson, Nakier Johnson, Treona Boyce, Chyna Scott, Natalya Boyce, Kymora Scott, Zakiah Jackson, Jasmyn Jackson, Caleb Boyce, Symphany Jackson, Che Bernardini, Kennedie and Kassedie August, Jeremiah Reid, Robert Cooper, Marva August, Joshua-Isaiah Jones, Rya Johnson, Cameron Robinson Scott, and a host of cousins, extended family, and friends.
