Virginia Schrader Obituary

Virginia “Ginny” Schrader (nee Leitz) passed away peacefully and with her daughters by her side on May 27th, 2023. Typical of her tenacious nature, she was determined to attend her 100th birthday celebration, which she helped to plan, on May 12, 2023. Fifteen days later, she went home to our Lord and the welcoming arms of her late husband Richard Schrader and her late son, Richard Schrader, Jr.

Virginia Schrader was born on May 12, 1923 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Married to Richard Schrader for 52 years, they raised their family of four in Northeast Philadelphia: Marlene Harding (Russell), the late Richard Schrader, Jr (Vicki), Di Ricks (Jack), and David Schrader (Marion). She worked for Acme Markets as a secretary before retiring and moving to Williamstown, New Jersey and later Norfolk, Virginia.

Virginia dedicated her retirement years to caring for family and for others. She was a respite volunteer for Samaritan Hospice, a volunteer for the gift shop at Jefferson Hospital (Kennedy) Washington Township, and a patient advocate and ombudsman for local nursing home residents. Predeceased by her parents, Thomas and Margaret Leitz, beloved sister to the late Beatrice Smith (William) and the late Dolores Scharff (John), cherished grandmother to Christa Varga (Joseph) and Renee Markert (Roger), and treasured great-grandmother to Adrianna, Gabrielle, Shea, and Brody.

Her grace, poise, wit, and strength were inspiring. She found a path through every obstacle, had a wonderful perspective on life that she was happy to share, and kept a great sense of humor through every change and challenge. She will be greatly missed by the friends and family who were lucky to be loved, shaped, and influenced by her for so many years. Her secret to a triumphant life: a daily dose of ice cream and/or wine, a good laugh, bear hugs, and a family who adored her.

Relatives and friends are invited to honor her life on Friday, June 2nd at St. Mary’s R.C. Church / Our Lady of Peace Parish, 32 Carroll Ave., Williamstown, NJ. Her viewing will be held from 10:00 – 11:00 AM.  Catholic Mass in her memory will be celebrated at 11:00 AM. Burial Our Lady of Grace Cemetery, Langhorne, Pa.

In lieu of flowers, Virginia wished for contributions made in her honor to the Food Pantry at St. Mary's R.C. Church / Our Lady of Peace Parish at the above address (contact Rose @ rotto@olopp.org) and / or  your local food pantry or your favorite charity.
