I just reconnected with Mark over a long lunch in April while visiting my son and his fiancee in Princeton. We hadn't seen each other for almost 38 years.
He still had his wry sense of humor and interests in photography and aviation. We had a good time talking and I looked forward to maintaining our friendship in the future.
We first crossed paths in 1979 for about six months at Cannon AFB, NM. I knew his roommate and would start asking Mark questions about photography. Mark was always economic with his answers so I would just badger him past the point of irritation until he'd surrender the information I was looking for. I guess in that process we became good friends.
I ended up with one of his Canon F1 cameras and assorted lenses in the deal and he became a runner. All you had to do is take one look at him to see his running potential and his times quickly embarrassed mine.
Mark J. Brooks had a keen intellect and strong mechanical mind and was very precise in everything he did. He was a quiet person but when he did say something, you listened. He was a great asset to the F-111D community and helped keep them flying.
I just found out about Mark's passing and regret not making his memorial service. My condolences to his family. Godspeed Mark!
